Occasionally, a homeowner must face problems that are a nuisance, like insects or mice. Mold, like a pest infestation, is an unwanted issue that can feel like it’s out of control. More than being difficult to clean and destructive to property, mold spores are harmful to your health. Follow these guidelines to prevent mold in the home.
How Does Mold Get Inside?
It’s impossible to completely stop mold spores from getting into the home, as they travel freely in the air. In order for these spores to develop into the mold that grows on surfaces, certain environmental conditions must be met. Consistent moisture and warm temperatures in an environment help mold grow year-round. The presence of moisture is the biggest contributor to helping mold thrive and it is likely to be found where water collects. To prevent mold in the home, you have to eliminate the moisture that facilitates its growth.
Prevent Mold in the Home by Following These Steps
1. Open the Windows
Open your windows periodically to let fresh air in. This is important, even in wintertime. Open windows, at least briefly, as frequently as possible. The fresh air will circulate into nearby rooms, helping to evaporate areas of moisture. With the windows open, water vapor can escape rather than just condensing onto other surfaces.
2. Wipe Up Water to Prevent Mold in the Home
Don’t ignore water droplets on the surfaces inside your home. This is often an issue after taking a shower or bath. If you see condensation forming on a wall, wipe the area down so the moisture doesn’t encourage mold growth. The water will evaporate into the air, increasing humidity in the home. If you notice even a small amount of water on the floor or on a countertop, take a few moments to soak it up with a towel.
3. Watch for Leaks
If your ceiling shows evidence of leaks from roofing damage, the moisture will also affect the surrounding materials. If there is visible mold on these surfaces, they need to be replaced. Running a dehumidifier in the area will eliminate residual water and prevent mold in the home.
4. Test for Mold
Schedule an appointment with a mold inspection and testing service. A certified professional will be able to identify areas of mold growth in your home and locate the source of underlying moisture intrusion. Samples of spores will also be taken and tested to estimate spore concentrations and know what types of mold are present.
